Bridge Troll Boardgame Café
Bridge Troll Boardgame Café is Tiverton's very own gaming café & shop. We stock a wide range of collectable card games.
Bridge Troll Boardgame Café: Shared Games, Good Company and a Place to Belong
Sometimes, the best way to spend an afternoon is to put your phone away, gather around a table and open a box of possibilities. A little friendly competition, an unexpected laugh, a conversation that carries on long after the game has finished.
That is the experience we want people to discover at Bridge Troll Boardgame Café, our independent, family-run café and games shop in Tiverton, Devon.
You do not need to call yourself a gamer. You do not need to know the rules already. You just need a little curiosity - we can help you find somewhere to start.
A small business built around people
We are Reuben and Sophia Beard, the people behind Bridge Troll. Our business began in 2019, and the community that has grown around it has helped shape what it is today. As that community grew, so did the need for space to meet, play and share our hobbies.
For us, running a games café is about much more than selling boxes or serving drinks. It is about creating a reason for people to come together: somewhere to spend time with your children, arrange a different kind of date night, reconnect with friends or discover a hobby that becomes part of your week.
We believe an independent business can be both a place to shop and a place to belong. That means caring about what happens after someone makes a purchase, helping newcomers find their feet and valuing the people who return week after week.
Discover something beyond the usual café visit
At Bridge Troll, you can explore a shared library of board games to enjoy in the café, with choices for different ages and levels of experience. There are games for a quick burst of fun and others you can settle into for a longer afternoon.
Perhaps you enjoy solving a puzzle together rather than competing. Perhaps your family loves something lively and unpredictable. Perhaps you have only ever played the familiar classics and would like to discover what else is out there.
Tell us what you enjoy and who you are playing with, and we will help you find a starting point. Learning something new should feel like an invitation, not an entrance exam.
Alongside the games, our café serves barista coffee, tea, hot chocolate and milkshakes, with cakes and snacks to enjoy while you play. You are also welcome to visit simply for a drink and a look around.
General stay-and-play at the café is free, with food and drink purchased separately. Some organised clubs, hosted sessions and special events have their own entry fees, so check the details when booking.
More enjoyment from the things we share
For people interested in more mindful ways to spend their time and money, a shared games library offers a simple possibility: you do not have to own everything you enjoy.
One game can bring together many different groups of people. The same box can provide a family afternoon, a catch-up between friends and the beginning of a new hobby. Different players bring different ideas, so returning to a familiar game need not mean having the same experience.
That is the connection between Bridge Troll and the values of the Circular Social community that feels most natural to us: sharing resources, enjoying things repeatedly and choosing experiences that bring people together.
Our shelves are there to be explored and played from, not simply looked at. You can discover the types of games you genuinely enjoy before deciding whether to build a collection of your own.
We love new games, but we also believe there is real value in returning to something you already enjoy. An afternoon well spent does not have to end with another bag of things to take home.
A welcome for different people and different ways of playing
There is no single type of person who belongs at a board game café.
You might be a parent looking for an activity you can genuinely join in with, rather than watch from the sidelines. You might be visiting Devon, finding your feet locally or looking for a social evening that centres on an activity.
You might simply want somewhere to enjoy a hobby without having to explain why you love it.
We welcome beginners as well as experienced players, and our community includes home-educated families and people with a range of abilities and additional needs. We aim to make asking questions feel comfortable and learning at your own pace feel normal.
For someone who finds walking into a new group daunting, having a shared activity can offer a useful starting point. There is something on the table to talk about; the conversation does not have to begin with perfect small talk.
Please contact us ahead of a visit to discuss particular needs or which sessions might suit you. We would rather have a helpful conversation than make assumptions about what works for everyone.
Find your people - and perhaps your next hobby
Alongside casual board gaming, our programme includes opportunities to enjoy Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Disney Lorcana, Dungeons & Dragons, chess and Blood on the Clocktower.
These offer different ways to get involved, from trading cards and friendly matches to collaborative storytelling, strategic thinking and lively social games. Some sessions are aimed at younger players; others are designed for adults or a wider mix of ages. Check individual event details for suitability, availability and booking requirements.
We are an organised-play store, and building a positive playing community matters to us. We want people to enjoy using their cards, learning their games and meeting others who share their interests.
Our shop also stocks board games, collectable card games, tabletop miniatures, paints and hobby tools. Whether you are choosing a gift or taking your first steps into a hobby, you can talk to us about what you are looking for.
Our aim is to help you find something you will enjoy, not leave you feeling that you need to understand an entire hobby before you can begin.
Rooted in Tiverton, with more to discover
Supporting Bridge Troll means supporting a family-run business with a physical home in Tiverton and a commitment to the community around it.
We want our town to have places where people do more than pass through: places where friendships can develop, interests can be shared and there is a reason to come back.
Our wider gaming community now also includes The Old Library, a separate members-only wargaming venue at Tiverton Memorial Hall. This provides dedicated space for tabletop battles, while the café remains the place to discover our board games, trading card activities and roleplaying sessions.
